A brilliant is a 4-point typeface, one of the smallest sizes in the traditional hierarchy of metal type. It sits between excelsior (3-point) and diamond (4.5-point or 5-point, depending on the system), though the exact boundaries between these minute sizes were never perfectly standardized across foundries. In metal type, a brilliant's sorts were so diminutive that compositors often needed magnification to set them accurately, and the type itself was fragile; a bent or broken character meant sorting through the case for a replacement from stock that might be similarly worn.

Brilliants appeared in print chiefly in footnotes, marginal notes, mathematical subscripts, and cramped reference material where space was precious. Because the letters were so small, they demanded high-quality paper, careful inking, and precise pressure to remain legible; on rough or absorbent stock, brilliants became muddy and nearly illegible. Publishers and printers valued them for their ability to pack information densely, but they were never popular for body text, and even in the early 20th century, readability concerns made them seem archaic.

The name "brilliant" is obscure in origin, though it likely derives from the sparkling, precise appearance such small type could achieve when well-printed on smooth paper. It belonged to the same fanciful naming convention that produced "pearl," "ruby," and "diamond" for other tiny sizes, a tradition that reflected the precious, intricate craft of type founding.

Obsolescence and legacy

Brilliants have been commercially extinct for decades. The shift from metal type to linotype and then to digital composition rendered the entire 4-point category redundant; modern designers achieve small-text effects through point scaling and font selection rather than casting physically tiny type. A few specialty foundries and letterpress practitioners maintain brilliant specimens in their collections, but setting new work in the size is now a historical exercise rather than a practical business.

Today, the term survives mainly in type catalogs and the memory of old compositors and print historians. Anyone working with metal type or studying the history of printing technology will encounter it, but for modern industrial printing operations, brilliant is a curiosity: a solved problem that successive technologies made irrelevant.
