BSC
Initialism of Basic Spacing between Centers: Used in integrated circuits to specify package mechanical dimensions. This is a theoretical true position dimension and has no tolerance.
BSC: the theoretical centerline grid for IC packages
BSC stands for Basic Spacing between Centers. In integrated circuit packaging, it defines the ideal distance between the geometric centerlines of component leads, pads, or mounting points. Unlike a normal dimension with a tolerance band, BSC is a theoretical reference value: it has no tolerance zone and serves as the basis for all other dimensional measurements on the package.
When an IC package specifies a pin pitch of 2.54 mm BSC, that is not a target with acceptable variance. Instead, it is the exact centerline-to-centerline distance used to derive other true position tolerances. A pin's actual position is then measured against this BSC centerline grid. The lead itself may be off-center within its own true position tolerance, but the grid itself is fixed and absolute.
BSC dimensions appear in standards like JEDEC package specifications for dual in-line packages (DIPs), small outline integrated circuits (SOICs), and ball grid arrays (BGAs). They define the theoretical footprint that PCB designers use to create landing patterns. Without BSC values, there would be no stable reference for establishing what constitutes an acceptable lead placement or solder pad location.
The distinction between BSC and actual toleranced dimensions matters during assembly and inspection. A lead measured 0.1 mm away from its BSC centerline might still be within specification if the true position tolerance allows it. However, if BSC itself drifted during manufacturing, every dimension downstream would be unreliable. This is why BSC is tightly controlled during the design phase and verified during process validation, not during routine part inspection.
Confusion arises because BSC appears on drawings alongside conventional tolerances. Some engineers mistakenly treat it as a nominal value with implied tolerance. In reality, BSC is a construction reference: it is the grid upon which the package geometry is mathematically built. Modern CAD systems and design rule checks treat BSC dimensions differently precisely because they anchor everything else.
