Miners adopted the term across underground metal and hard-rock mining, and it persists in that context despite the trade increasingly moving toward electro-hydraulic alternatives. In some operations, the term refers specifically to the older reciprocating designs rather than the newer rotary-percussive models, though usage varies by region and mine type.
A typical buzzie weighs between 20 and 40 pounds depending on the bore size and drill length. Operators must manage fatigue, as the tool's vibration and recoil demand physical stamina over a shift.
