A small long and narrow boat, propelled by one or more people (depending on the size of canoe), using single-bladed paddles. The paddlers face in the direction of travel, in either a seated position, or kneeling on the bottom of the boat. Canoes are open on top, and pointed at both ends.

A canoe is a shallow-draft vessel, typically 4 to 6 meters long, with a pointed bow and stern, open gunwales, and a curved cross-section designed to shed water rather than enclose it. One or more paddlers sit or kneel inside, propelling the boat forward using single-bladed paddles held vertically in the water. The hull shape and low freeboard make it responsive to paddle strokes and easy to maneuver in confined spaces.
Marine trades distinguish canoes by construction method and intended environment. Traditional bark canoes, built over wooden ribs with bark lashed and sealed with pitch, remain in historical and cultural use. Modern recreational canoes use fiberglass cloth over polyester or epoxy resin, rotomolded polyethylene for durability and cost, or laminated wood veneers. Racing and whitewater designs narrow the beam and raise rocker (curvature of the keel) for speed or obstacle avoidance; touring canoes widen the beam for stability and cargo capacity.
In shipyard and repair contexts, canoes present specific challenges. Fiberglass hulls suffer fatigue cracking at the inwale junction and gel coat failure from UV exposure; polyethylene becomes brittle in cold and soft in direct sun. Wooden canoes require seasonal treatment of interior ribs and exterior sealant maintenance. Paddlers must understand trim, weight distribution, and trim ballast to avoid broaching in moving water or capsizing in beam seas.
The term derives from Arawakan canoa, recorded by Columbus in the Caribbean and adopted into Spanish and English maritime vocabulary. The design itself spreads across cultures and climates: indigenous peoples in North America, Oceania, and Southeast Asia developed functionally similar narrow hulls for rivers, coastal waters, and open ocean.
Canoes occupy a specific niche in marine classification. They are smaller and more open than kayaks (which have covered decks and paddle-holes); they differ from rowboats by paddle rather than oar propulsion; they lack the load capacity and seaworthiness of dinghies or small cutters. In commercial fisheries and expedition logistics, canoes serve where weight matters and infrastructure is scarce.
