A capture card is a circuit board that converts analog or digital video signals from an external source into data a computer can store and process. It sits between a camera, broadcast deck, medical imaging device, or other video source and the host computer, acting as a translator and buffer. The card handles the timing and synchronization demands of live video, which raw computer ports cannot manage reliably.

Capture cards accept video through various connectors: composite (RCA), S-Video, component (YPbPr), HDMI, SDI, or analog RGB. Older cards work with interlaced signals at 29.97 or 25 frames per second; modern units handle progressive scan and high frame rates. Resolution ranges from 720×480 (NTSC) and 720×576 (PAL) for broadcast standard definition, up to 4K at 60 Hz on current hardware. The card samples the incoming signal, quantizes it to digital values (typically 8 or 10 bits per channel), and writes the data to system RAM or storage via PCIe or USB.

Hardware and Performance

Internal capture cards mount directly in a PCIe slot and offer the lowest latency and highest throughput, achieving 10 gigabits per second or more depending on interface generation. External USB capture devices sacrifice speed for portability and ease of installation but introduce measurable delay, typically 40 to 80 milliseconds, which matters in live switching scenarios. Some cards include onboard FPGA or dedicated processors to handle color space conversion, deinterlacing, or scaling without burdening the CPU.

The critical limitation of any capture card is bandwidth. An uncompressed 1080p60 stream at 10-bit color demands roughly 6.6 gigabits per second; most cards compress in hardware using H.264, ProRes, or DNxHD codecs to fit within their interface limits. Jitter, dropped frames, and audio sync drift occur when the capture pipeline cannot keep pace with the incoming signal rate.

Capture cards are standard in broadcast centers, live streaming setups, medical endoscopy recording, industrial process documentation, and retro gaming preservation. The term distinguishes them from frame grabbers, which capture single still images, and from simple pass-through devices that record to external media without CPU involvement.
