The situation where two or more contactless payment cards are simultaneously detected by a card reader, possibly resulting in the incorrect card, or more than one card, being charged.

Card clash occurs when a contactless payment reader detects the radio frequency (RF) signals from two or more payment cards at the same time, typically within its detection zone of 10 to 15 centimetres. The reader cannot reliably distinguish which card the transaction belongs to, and may either fail to process any payment, charge the wrong card, or attempt to charge multiple cards simultaneously. This is particularly common at busy points of sale, in crowded transit systems, or when a customer carries multiple contactless cards in a wallet or bag.

The underlying cause is the nature of RF communication itself. Contactless cards transmit data via NFC (near-field communication) or proprietary frequency protocols, and when signals from two cards reach the reader's antenna at overlapping times, they interfere with each other. This is called signal collision. The reader typically expects to receive a clean, identifiable RF response from a single card. When multiple signals arrive, the data becomes corrupted or ambiguous, and the payment terminal's software cannot verify which card initiated the transaction.

Detection and Prevention

Modern payment terminals attempt to mitigate card clash through several mechanisms. Some systems are designed to read only the strongest signal, effectively prioritizing the card held closest to the reader. Others use rapid polling cycles to detect multiple cards and then reject the transaction entirely, forcing the user to present only one card. Anti-collision protocols, borrowed from RFID standards, allow some readers to sequence detection across multiple cards, though this slows the transaction. The most practical prevention remains user discipline: present one card at a time, and keep other contactless cards away from the reader during payment.

Card clash is distinct from legitimate duplicate charges, which result from a customer presenting the same card twice or a terminal malfunction that processes a valid single-card payment twice. Clash specifically refers to ambiguity caused by simultaneous card presence. The issue is more pronounced in markets with high contactless card penetration, such as the UK and parts of Europe, where multiple cards per person are common and readers are highly sensitive to enable fast payments.

From a merchant's perspective, card clash creates operational friction and customer frustration, especially at self-checkout systems and transit fare gates. It also creates a small but measurable risk of charging the wrong card and generating chargebacks. Terminal manufacturers continue to refine RF shielding and collision-detection algorithms, but the fundamental problem remains: contactless payment systems are inherently vulnerable to this condition when multiple cards are in proximity.
