A cargo liner is a protective fabric or plastic sheet fitted inside a vehicle's cargo hold, boot, or aircraft cabin to shield the metal structure from moisture, dirt, and abrasion caused by freight movement. In automotive use, it covers the floor and walls of the trunk or load area; in aircraft, it lines the entire cargo compartment. The liner absorbs impact from shifting boxes and prevents corrosive materials from contacting the vehicle's body.

Automotive cargo liners are typically made from heavy-duty woven polypropylene, rubberized fabric, or layered polyethylene, usually 0.5 to 1.5 mm thick. They are either bonded to the metal substrate with contact adhesive or laid loose and held by fasteners. Some designs incorporate a moisture barrier on the underside to prevent water pooling; others have a textured top surface to grip cargo and reduce sliding. Custom-fitted liners are molded to the exact contour of the load space, while universal types are cut and trimmed on site.

Aircraft cargo liners serve additional functions beyond protection. They must meet specific flammability standards set by aviation authorities and are often made from aramid or fiberglass-reinforced composites. These liners reduce vibration noise during flight and can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement after heavy use or exposure to hazardous materials. The weight of the liner is engineered to be minimal, as aircraft operators account for every kilogram in fuel consumption calculations.

Damage to cargo liners typically results from punctures by sharp cargo corners, abrasion from repeated loading cycles, or water infiltration at seams and edges. A compromised liner allows metal underneath to rust, particularly in vehicles exposed to salt spray or humid climates. Replacement becomes necessary when liners separate from the substrate, tear extensively, or develop permanent creases that allow liquids to pool.

The term liner derives from the concept of lining a container. In cargo operations, the word distinguishes this protective layer from the structural shell itself. Cargo liners sit at the intersection of logistics efficiency and vehicle preservation, valued by fleet operators and shippers because they extend the working life of valuable cargo holds and reduce maintenance costs over the vehicle's service life.
