A cartridge ejector is a mechanical device that removes a removable cartridge from its housing or drive unit. It may be a spring-loaded pin, a lever, or a cam that converts a push or pull action into linear motion sufficient to dislodge the cartridge and push it clear of the slot or bay. The ejector must overcome the friction of guide rails and any latching mechanism holding the cartridge in place, then move it far enough that a user can grip and withdraw it by hand.
Cartridge ejectors appear across multiple hardware platforms. In tape drives, ejectors push a tape cartridge up and forward out of a vertical slot. In older computer disk drives, they operated on 5.25-inch floppy media and optical discs. In industrial equipment, ejectors handle replacement cartridges for filters, ink, toner, coolant, or proprietary consumables. A typical spring ejector stores energy when the cartridge is inserted, then releases it when a release button is pressed or a latch disengages.
Common failure modes include spring fatigue, wear of the guide rails that permit binding, and accumulation of dust or debris in the ejection path. If an ejector spring weakens, the cartridge may not clear the housing fully, causing the user to force it out and potentially damage connector pins or guide slots. Lever-type ejectors can bend or break under excessive force, especially if a user tries to eject a cartridge that is still electrically active or mechanically locked by a separate interlock.
The naming convention stems from mechanical ejection systems developed for removable-media equipment in the 1970s and 1980s, where springs and levers were the only practical way to move cartridges without motors. The term persists in contexts where manual push-button ejection remains the standard, even though the underlying mechanisms have refined. In contrast, modern disc drives and solid-state cartridge systems often use motorized ejection, but the term cartridge ejector is still applied to describe the functional subsystem.
Reliability of the ejector is critical in high-duty equipment: a filter cartridge jammed in a housing can force downtime, or worse, leave contaminated fluid in the system if the failed ejector prevents removal. Industrial equipment designers therefore rate ejectors for cycle life, specify materials that resist corrosion and fatigue, and often include redundant or cam-based mechanisms to guarantee disengagement even under moderate user force.
