CAS: how telephone switches talk to carrier gear
Channel-associated signalling is a method for transmitting control information alongside voice or data on individual telephone channels within a digital trunk. The signalling occupies the same time slot or a dedicated bit position on the same transmission line as the traffic itself, so there is no separate signalling channel. This tight coupling made CAS the standard approach in telephone networks before out-of-band systems like common channel interoffice signalling (CCIS) became widespread.
In a typical CAS implementation on a T1 line (1.544 Mbps carrying 24 channels), signalling information occupies bit 8 of every sixth frame, stealing capacity from the voice path itself. The signalling bits convey essential information: on-hook and off-hook status, dialled digits, ringing signals, and disconnect notifications. Different digit encoding schemes exist, most commonly Multi-Frequency (MF) tones or pulse signalling, though some implementations use bit patterns directly in the robbed frame.
Variants and limitations
CAS systems vary by region and era. North American systems typically use SF (single-frequency) or MF tone signalling. European networks employed different digit signalling schemes. The core weakness of CAS is that signalling bandwidth is permanently reserved on each channel regardless of whether signalling information is actually being transmitted; this overhead becomes significant at scale. Additionally, the direct coupling of signalling to traffic means call setup depends on channel availability in ways that later network architectures avoid.
CAS persists in legacy telephone infrastructure and certain carrier circuits, but has been largely superseded by out-of-band signalling systems that use dedicated message channels. However, many existing PBX systems and carrier interfaces still support CAS for backward compatibility with older central office equipment and trunk interfaces. Understanding CAS remains essential for anyone maintaining or troubleshooting older telephone systems or hybrid networks where CAS circuits are still in service.
