CC: when one paint layer shows through another
Contrasting colour, or CC, occurs when a base coat or undercoat shows through the topcoat due to insufficient coverage or opacity. It appears as a colour shift or mottling across the painted surface, most visible under raking light. The underlying layer becomes visible because the topcoat lacks the hiding power or thickness needed to mask it completely. This defect is common in automotive finishing, industrial coating, and decorative painting.
CC becomes critical in multi-layer paint systems. A white primer under a pale topcoat, or a dark base under light colour, creates the conditions for visibility. The problem worsens if the topcoat is thinned excessively, applied in a single thin pass, or formulated with low pigment concentration. Wet-on-wet application without proper flash-off time can also trap the undercoat's colour at the surface. High-contrast base and top combinations demand thicker or more opaque topcoats, and sometimes additional intermediate sealing.
Why it happens: Paint opacity depends on pigment volume and particle size. Some colours, particularly yellows and oranges, have naturally low hiding power. Environmental factors matter too: humidity, substrate temperature, and air movement affect solvent evaporation and film formation. Cold substrates slow curing, leaving the topcoat thinner and more transparent than intended. Spray application technique also governs film thickness; inadequate overlap or pressure leads to uneven, thin coverage.
In automotive work, CC is a reject-level fault. Inspectors use cross-hatch tape or scratch tests to confirm adhesion, but also conduct visual grading under standard overhead and raking lights. Light-box inspection is standard. In industrial coating, CC is documented in process standards; many specifications require a minimum dry film thickness (DFT) and explicitly prohibit colour bleed-through. Solvent-based systems are more forgiving than waterborne ones, which dry faster and can trap solvents.
Prevention relies on recipe control, application discipline, and environmental monitoring. Using a tinter that matches the topcoat colour, increasing topcoat viscosity, ensuring proper spray distance and gun speed, and maintaining substrate temperature above dew point all reduce risk. For problem combinations, a full-opacity primer seal or intermediate coat is the industrial solution. Testing with drawdown cards or test panels before production coating catches CC risks early.
