A centikatal (symbol ckat) is a submultiple of the katal, the SI unit of catalytic activity. It represents 10 to the power of negative 2 katals, or one hundredth of a katal. In practical terms, it measures how fast an enzyme or catalyst converts substrate into product under defined conditions. Where a katal is rarely encountered in routine lab work, the centikatal sits at a more workable scale for typical enzyme assays and quality control measurements.

The katal itself was defined by the International Committee for Weights and Measures in 1999 to replace the older unit, the enzyme unit (U or IU), which had no firm SI foundation. One katal equals one mole of substrate converted per second; one centikatal therefore equals 0.01 moles per second. This direct tie to molar chemistry makes the centikatal especially useful in pharmaceutical assay, food industry enzyme testing, and clinical biochemistry where reaction rates are tracked against substrate concentration and time.

In enzyme kinetics work, centikatal readings typically appear when measuring specific activity, which expresses catalytic power per unit of enzyme protein, usually in ckat per milligram. A purified enzyme preparation might have a specific activity of 5 to 50 ckat/mg depending on the enzyme and substrate. Clinical labs use centikatal units for diagnostic assays: liver function tests, for example, often report enzyme levels like alkaline phosphatase in ckat/L of serum.

Adoption and historical friction

Despite its SI credentials, the centikatal has faced slow adoption in older laboratories and industrial settings, where the enzyme unit persists. The relationship is straightforward: 1 unit equals roughly 16.67 nanokatals, or 0.01667 ckat. Many published assay protocols still reference enzyme units, and conversion between old and new units remains a source of error in laboratory work. Regulatory bodies and standards bodies have progressively mandated the shift to ckat, but legacy data and informal shop practice mean both units coexist in many workplaces.

When specifying enzyme products or assay results, always confirm which unit system is in use. A supplier stating enzyme activity in units versus centikatal is quoting the same biology, but the numbers will differ by a factor of 60. For traceability and compliance in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, the centikatal is now the expected notation; however, verification against international reference standards remains essential, as calibration standards themselves may still be archived in older units.
