charging point: where an EV battery gets its electrons back
A charging point is a physical installation that supplies electrical power to the batteries of electric vehicles. Unlike a petrol pump, which transfers fuel in minutes, a charging point connects to a vehicle's onboard charging equipment and delivers current over a period of hours or, in fast-charging installations, under an hour. The point itself is the interface: a weatherproof enclosure mounted on a wall, pole, or stand, containing a connector (typically Type 2 in Europe, CCS, or CHAdeMO), metering electronics, and switching gear.
Charging points fall into three broad power bands. Slow chargers (3 to 7 kilowatts) plug into domestic single-phase supplies and replenish a 40 to 60 kilowatt-hour battery in eight to twelve hours. These are common in home installations and workplaces. Fast chargers (22 to 43 kilowatts) use three-phase power and reduce charging time to four to six hours; they are typical at hotels and retail sites. Rapid chargers (43 kilowatts and above, reaching 350 kilowatts on the latest DC fast-charging networks) deliver 80 percent charge in 20 to 45 minutes and are placed on major routes and at service stations.
Infrastructure and grid demand
The charging point's electrical supply must be sized and protected according to the power rating. A 7 kilowatt charger in a domestic installation requires a dedicated 32-ampere circuit breaker. Larger installations demand coordination with the electricity network operator to avoid overload; a cluster of rapid chargers may need several hundred kilowatts of contracted capacity. The charging point's meter records energy delivered and is central to billing, whether the vehicle owner pays per kilowatt-hour or via a subscription model.
Common failure modes include corroded connectors in damp environments, nuisance tripping of residual current devices (RCDs) due to poorly shielded cables, and firmware faults that prevent handshaking between vehicle and charger. The onboard charger in the vehicle accepts the alternating current from slow and fast chargers and converts it to direct current for the battery; rapid chargers bypass this and deliver DC directly, which demands higher-grade connectors and safety protocols.
The term charging point is largely European and official (used in EU regulations and standards such as IEC 61851). In North America, the equipment is often called a charging station or EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment). The distinction matters: a 'charging station' may refer to an entire facility with multiple connectors and amenities, while a single charging point is one connector or outlet. As EV uptake accelerates, the density and power rating of charging points have become critical bottlenecks in fleet electrification and public infrastructure planning.
