Chicane: forced detour that makes drivers slow down
A chicane is a deliberately imposed serpentine path that forces a vehicle to change direction sharply, usually left then right or vice versa, in a confined space. It serves a single purpose: to reduce speed without stopping traffic entirely. The obstacle itself can be a raised median, concrete barriers, painted lines, or a combination of these. Chicanes appear in loading yards, warehouse access routes, parking facilities, and industrial zones where speed control is critical but a full stop is impractical.
In logistics operations, chicanes are engineered to constrain heavy vehicles, forklifts, and delivery trucks to speeds between 5 and 15 kilometres per hour depending on the radius of the curves. The effective width of the passage is narrowed to force drivers to navigate the turns deliberately. A well-designed chicane typically uses two opposing curves with a minimum radius of 6 to 8 meters for standard rigid trucks, though this varies with site constraints. The angle and spacing of barriers determine both the speed reduction and the likelihood of contact.
Common failures occur when chicanes are too tight for the vehicles they must accommodate, causing wing mirrors to clip barriers or trailers to swing wide. Under-signage is equally problematic, as drivers unfamiliar with a site may attempt to bypass the chicane at speed, leading to collisions or rollovers on tight turns. Poor surface drainage around chicanes creates pooling water that hides the obstacle line, especially at night. Faded or missing paint markings render chicanes invisible until a vehicle is committed to entry.
The term originates from horse racing and golf course design, where a chicane describes a sharp double bend inserted into an otherwise straight path. It was borrowed into traffic engineering and later into logistics vocabulary. The analogy holds: the obstacle exists to discipline movement, not to stop it.
In warehouse and port environments, chicanes are often paired with speed bumps, rumble strips, or radar speed indicators. They work best where sightlines are clear and the approach is level. On slopes or in blind corners, a chicane becomes a liability. Regulatory guidance in most jurisdictions requires chicanes to be marked with reflective paint, high-visibility barriers, and warning signs at least 30 meters before the obstacle. Some facilities use active bollards that rise or lower to allow emergency access while maintaining the speed constraint during normal operation.
