A type of brake that presses a cast-iron block against the tyre of a railway wheel when activated; they can be on opposite sides of a wheel (when viewed from the side).

A clasp brake is a friction brake that works by pressing cast-iron brake blocks, or shoes, against the outer tyre of a railway wheel. The blocks clamp the wheel from opposite sides, much like a hand squeezing an object. When the brake lever or air pressure actuates the mechanism, linkages force the shoes inward until they grip the rotating wheel tyre, converting kinetic energy into heat and bringing the train to a halt.
Unlike block brakes that act on only one side of the wheel, clasp brakes use two opposing shoes positioned symmetrically on either side of the wheel when viewed from the side profile. This balanced design reduces lateral forces on the axle and wheel bearings, a significant advantage in locomotives and heavily loaded freight wagons. The shoes are typically mounted on a spider or frame that pivots or slides in response to brake actuation.
The cast-iron brake blocks are replaceable components that wear during use. Iron-on-iron contact between the shoe and the steel tyre generates high friction coefficients, typically between 0.25 and 0.35 when dry, though this drops in wet conditions. Brake fade occurs if the tyre temperature exceeds roughly 260 degrees Celsius, a real constraint on long steep gradients where repeated applications can overheat the wheels.
Actuation and variants
Clasp brakes operate by different energy sources: screw gear mechanisms hand-operated on smaller wagons, hydraulic cylinders on passenger stock, or compressed air systems on modern freight and passenger trains. Air-operated clasp brakes use dual cylinders mounted on the brake frame, one on each side, which pull or push rods connected to the brake shoes. Direct-pull and floating-pin designs are common variants, each distributing load differently across the shoe surfaces.
The term clasp refers to the grasping action of the opposing blocks; it is older terminology still found in British and European railway documentation. In North America, the equivalent mechanism is often called a two-shoe brake or clasp brake interchangeably. These brakes saw widest deployment in the mid-twentieth century but remain in service on heritage railways and some freight operations where their simplicity and robustness justify their continued use over more advanced designs.
