A classification yard is a railroad facility where incoming freight trains are broken apart, their cars sorted by destination or commodity type, and reassembled into outbound trains. Rather than running a single heavy train directly through the network, railroads use these yards to consolidate traffic: a train arriving with mixed cargo bound for twenty different destinations gets uncoupled, its cars staged on separate tracks, and new trains formed that group cars heading the same way. This switching operation is what makes freight rail economical over long distances.

The physical layout of a classification yard reflects its function. A typical yard contains a receiving section where inbound trains arrive, a hump or sorting area where cars are dispationed (pushed or rolled downgrade), a bowl or body of parallel sidings where cars are held and sorted, and a departure section where outbound trains are assembled. Humped yards use gravity to move cars: a locomotive pushes cars up the hump, then uncouples them one at a time so they roll down into the correct siding. Flat yards rely on switching locomotives to position cars manually. Modern yards employ retarders, mechanical or pneumatic braking devices installed in the hump track, to control car speed and prevent collisions in the bowl.

Classification yards handle enormous throughput. A large yard might process 2,000 to 3,000 cars per day. Cars arrive coupled in strings of 50 to 150 units, weighing up to 30 tons each when loaded. The work is labor-intensive: car knockers (workers) ride trains, manually couple and uncouple cars, and set hand brakes. Switchmen and yardmasters direct operations from towers or mobile command centers, reading switching lists that specify which cars go to which destinations and monitoring track occupancy. Confusion or miscommunication can cause derailments, pile-ups, or blocked sidings that cascade delays through the network.

The term classification reflects the core operation: sorting. The word yard derives from the enclosed rail facilities where switching and storage occur, distinct from mainline track. Classification yards are also called marshalling yards (especially in British and European usage) or switching yards, though the latter can refer to smaller facilities that perform limited sorting. A gravity yard emphasizes the hump method; a flat yard or receiving yard denotes the absence of one.

Classification yards sit at the backbone of freight railroad operations, typically positioned at major junctions or regional hubs where many lines converge. They are expensive to build and maintain, requiring land, rail infrastructure, electrical systems for retarders and lights, and continuous staffing. Railroad companies operate only a handful of major classification yards per region; smaller yards exist at industrial sidings and customer facilities. The rise of intermodal transport (containers and trailers on rail cars) and just-in-time logistics has pushed some railroads to bypass classification yards by running more direct point-to-point trains, yet high-volume commodity routes still depend on yards to consolidate partial shipments and balance equipment distribution across the network.
