cloud: distributed computing infrastructure, not a place

In electrical and telecom engineering, a cloud is a symbolic representation of a network whose internal topology is deliberately unspecified or abstracted. On block diagrams and system schematics, engineers draw a cloud shape to indicate that data or signals pass through a complex network of routers, switches, and transmission media without needing to show each physical link. The term emerged from the practice of obscuring network detail behind a visual boundary, keeping focus on what enters and exits rather than how the internals are organized.

Clouds appear everywhere in telecom design: between access networks and core infrastructure, between data centers, between customer equipment and service providers. A cloud might represent a metropolitan area network, a wide area network, the public internet, or a private carrier backbone. The engineer specifies what protocols must traverse the cloud (IP, Ethernet, ATM), what quality of service or latency constraints apply, and what traffic volumes it must carry, but leaves the internal routing, redundancy, and physical path to the network operator or subsequent design phases.

Clouds are essential for hierarchical network design. A systems architect uses clouds to separate concerns: the cloud absorbs questions about how many hops exist, which vendors supply each segment, or whether the path uses fiber or microwave. This abstraction lets teams design access networks and service platforms in parallel. When specifications must be concrete, the cloud becomes a shaded box with labeled inputs and outputs showing bandwidth, protocols, and availability targets instead.

The term has persisted despite the rise of cloud computing as a commercial service. An engineer might say "the data flows through the cloud" meaning either the public internet, a carrier network, or a vendor's hosted infrastructure. Context determines which. In legacy schematics and standards documents, the cloud shape itself remains the standard symbol for unspecified network segments, distinct from explicit switches or routers drawn as labeled boxes.
