Initialism of constant linear velocity, a qualifier for the rated speed of an optical drive.

CLV: optical disc speed that stays constant as you read

Constant linear velocity, or CLV, refers to a disc drive operating mode where the speed of the disc surface remains fixed relative to the read head, regardless of the radius at which data is being accessed. This means the spindle motor adjusts its rotation speed continuously as the laser or stylus moves between the inner and outer portions of a disc. When reading near the center, the disc spins faster; as you move toward the edge, rotation slows. This ensures that data passes under the read head at the same speed throughout.

CLV became standard in compact disc (CD) technology, where data is arranged in a tight spiral starting near the center. Because the spiral track has constant pitch, a fixed linear velocity keeps data transfer rates steady. Audio CDs typically specify CLV at 1.2 to 1.4 meters per second, which translates to roughly 200 to 500 rpm depending on track position. This contrasts sharply with hard drives and earlier vinyl turntables, which spin at constant angular velocity and must vary read speed as the head moves radially.

When CLV breaks down

The weakness of CLV is mechanical complexity. The spindle motor must respond dynamically to head position, requiring precise feedback control. Cheap drives may lag slightly, causing buffer underruns during high-speed transfers or writes. Scratches, dust, or warping that affects track-following stability can also disrupt the motor's ability to maintain target velocity. DVD and Blu-ray drives often use hybrid or modified CLV schemes to balance linear velocity with acceptable motor response times and burst speeds.

Manufacturing tolerances matter greatly. A drive rated "4x CLV" for CDs runs at four times the standard linear velocity, roughly 5.6 meters per second. Achieving this across millions of units requires tight control of spindle bearings, optical pickup focusing, and servo electronics. Older drives sometimes used zoned constant angular velocity (ZCAV) as a compromise, dividing the disc into regions and holding velocity constant within each zone rather than everywhere.

Today CLV remains relevant mainly in legacy CD/DVD environments and in some optical archival systems where data longevity matters more than speed. Modern USB drives and SSDs have rendered optical CLV drives largely obsolete for consumer use, but the acronym persists in drive specifications and in the technical vocabulary of anyone maintaining playback equipment or working with optical media standards.
