A coil is a length of wire wound in tight, repeating loops around a cylindrical or toroidal form. The wire itself is usually copper, sometimes aluminum, and is often insulated with enamel or plastic coating. When current flows through the coil, the overlapping loops create a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of each turn. This fundamental behavior, current producing magnetism, makes the coil one of the most versatile components in industrial electronics.
Coils serve several distinct functions depending on their design and application. A choke or inductor coil resists changes in current flow, making it useful for filtering and smoothing. A transformer coil works in pairs: primary and secondary windings on a shared core allow AC voltage to be stepped up or down with minimal loss. A relay coil, wound around an iron armature, generates enough magnetic force when energized to flip mechanical contacts. Motor coils (or windings) interact with permanent magnets or other coils to produce rotational force.
The effectiveness of a coil depends on wire gauge, number of turns, core material, and physical dimensions. Heavy wire carries more current with less heat loss but reduces turn count in a fixed space; thin wire allows more turns but has higher resistance. Iron or ferrite cores dramatically amplify the magnetic field compared to an air core. Coils operating at high frequencies often use ferrite or powdered iron cores to reduce eddy current losses. The inductance of a coil, measured in henries, quantifies how strongly it resists current changes and is proportional to the square of the turn count.
Failures in coils typically stem from insulation breakdown due to voltage spikes, thermal stress from sustained overcurrent, or mechanical damage to windings. In humid or corrosive environments, moisture can degrade the enamel coating and cause shorts between turns. Transformers are particularly vulnerable to saturation if DC bias or unusual harmonics are present. Testing with a multimeter can detect gross shorts, but a megohmmeter is needed to measure insulation resistance and predict failure risk.
The term 'coil' comes straightforwardly from the helical shape of the wound wire. In older texts and some regional trades, coils are called spools or bobbins, especially when referring to the form itself rather than the assembled electromagnetic device. Industrial suppliers stock coils in standard inductance values for filtering, tuning, and impedance matching; custom wound coils are manufactured to specification for motors, transformers, solenoids, and sensors.
