A comby wheel is one that has developed a network of fine, shallow cracks across a localised area of the tread surface. These cracks form a pattern resembling a comb and typically cover only a small section rather than the entire circumference. The defect is a surface phenomenon; the cracks do not penetrate deeply into the wheel material, but they mark the onset of material degradation and must be monitored.
Combing most commonly occurs in cast iron or forged steel wheels that have been subjected to repeated thermal stress. Rapid heating and cooling, particularly during heavy braking, causes differential expansion and contraction across the tread face. The outer metal cools faster than the interior, setting up tensile stresses that the brittle tread material cannot accommodate. Over many thermal cycles, these micro-fractures accumulate and link into a visible comb pattern.
Detection and Management
Combing is identified during routine wheel inspection using both visual examination and sometimes ultrasonic testing to assess the depth of the cracking. A minor comb defect may be left in service if the cracks do not progress and the wheel passes dimensional limits, but progression is tracked at each inspection interval. Severe combing or combing that spreads across a large area of the tread requires wheel replacement, as it indicates structural compromise and risk of spalling.The term reflects the visual appearance: the fine parallel lines of the crack network resemble the teeth of a comb. It is distinct from other wheel defects such as shelling (where the tread surface flakes away) or spalling (larger chipping), though combing can be a precursor to these more serious failures if left unchecked.
