A key on a personal computer or terminal keyboard used in combination to modify the function of other keys.

The control key, marked Ctrl on most keyboards, is a modifier key that alters the behavior of other keys when pressed simultaneously. On industrial control terminals and operator stations, it serves as a primary means to access secondary functions without requiring additional hardware buttons. A single keystroke like Ctrl+C might stop a running process, while Ctrl+S saves data, functions that would otherwise require dedicated buttons or menu navigation.
In industrial settings, the control key became standard on terminals interfacing with process control systems, data acquisition equipment, and programmable logic controllers. Its use follows conventions established in Unix and early computer operating systems, where Ctrl combinations provided rapid access to critical functions. Operators on factory floors, water treatment plants, and power stations rely on these combinations to halt equipment, acknowledge alarms, or switch between display screens without removing hands from the keyboard or breaking workflow.
Most industrial keyboards feature the control key in the lower left corner, though some ergonomic or specialized variants place a second control key on the lower right. On older equipment, particularly terminals manufactured before the 1990s, the control key occupied different positions. Modern industrial keyboards often have a Ctrl key on both left and right sides to accommodate left and right-handed users and reduce strain during extended operation.
The control key differs functionally from the shift key, which modifies characters (uppercase versus lowercase), and from the alt key, which typically accesses menu functions or alternative character sets. In industrial applications, Ctrl combinations are often mission-critical: Ctrl+Alt+Delete might reset a hung system, while Ctrl+Break terminates a running program. Keyboard layouts for equipment controlling machinery or chemical processes often label these combinations directly on overlays or printed guides attached to the terminal.
Modern touch-screen interfaces on industrial equipment have reduced reliance on physical control keys, yet many operators still prefer keyboard terminals for speed and muscle memory. In environments where gloved operation is required, oversized control keys with tactile feedback remain common. The control key's evolution reflects decades of compromise between standardization and the specific demands of industrial work: it must be easy to reach, impossible to press accidentally, and universally understood across different equipment and manufacturers.
