In printing, a core is the rigid cylindrical tube around which paper, film, or other substrate is wound during manufacturing, storage, and use. It forms the structural spine of a roll and determines how the material feeds through presses, converting equipment, and finishing machines. The core must be strong enough to support the weight and tension of thousands of kilograms of wound material without deflecting or collapsing.
Cores are typically made from kraft paper laminate, plastic, or aluminum. Paper cores range from 2 to 6 inches in diameter for small rolls used in label printing and tissue converting, up to 12 inches or more for wide-format substrate in offset and flexographic presses. Aluminum cores, used in high-speed operations and wide rolls, offer superior rigidity and are favored where precise diameter tolerance matters. The wall thickness increases with the core diameter: a 3-inch core might have 3/16-inch walls, while a 12-inch core needs 1/4-inch or thicker.
Paper cores are wound from kraft paper strips glued and compressed around a mandrel. The number of plies (typically 5 to 10) and the density of the windup control the core's crush strength and weight. A defective core that splits, delaminates, or has eccentric diameter will jam equipment or damage the wound material. Aluminum cores are seamless and maintain tighter tolerances but cost more; they see use in premium applications where they are rewound or reused many times.
Cores sit at the intersection of material handling, machinery design, and waste. A printing operation may go through dozens per shift. Removal of the spent core after unwinding is a standard stop in any converting line. Some operations recycle cores; others send them to landfill. The inner diameter must match the arbor or spindle of the equipment it feeds into. Mismatched core sizes are a common source of setup error and downtime.
The term "core" derives from its role as the inner support structure, borrowed from everyday language (apple core, core of a tree). In technical printing vocabulary, it often appears as "paper core" or "tube" when material-specific precision is required. Related equipment such as slitters, rewinders, and sheeter infeed systems all depend on consistent core specification and condition to run smoothly.
