coursing joint: the mortar line between masonry layers
A coursing joint is the horizontal mortar bed that sits between successive courses, or layers, of bricks, blocks, or stone in a masonry wall. It runs the full width of the wall and carries the load of the course above while bonding that course to the one below. The thickness of a coursing joint typically ranges from 10 to 12 mm in modern brickwork, though this varies with material size and specification.
The quality and durability of coursing joints depend heavily on mortar composition and workmanship. Mortar must be plastic enough to fill voids fully, yet firm enough to support the weight above without squeezing out excessively during laying. Weak mortar or incomplete filling leaves air pockets that trap moisture and reduce bond strength. Conversely, mortar that is too stiff may not pack properly, leaving hairline gaps that become paths for water infiltration.
Maintenance and failure
Coursing joints fail through several mechanisms: frost action breaks down mortar in damp climates, sulfate attack from salts in soil or water, and simple erosion from wind and rain. Repointing, the process of removing failed mortar and replacing it with fresh material, is one of the most common long-term maintenance tasks on brick and stone buildings. The depth of recut mortar during repointing must match the original, typically one-third the thickness of the coursing joint itself, to avoid stress concentration at the new joint.
The term coursing joint distinguishes the horizontal bed joint from the vertical joint between adjacent units, called a perpend or head joint. These require different mortar pressures and packing techniques. In ashlar masonry and other high-quality work, coursing joints are often raked, struck, or weathered to shed water and enhance appearance, which adds to both cost and skill requirements in construction.
