Cradling is the structural lattice of wooden strips installed behind plaster or lath in arched, barrel-vaulted, or coved ceilings. It serves as the substrate to which laths are nailed and provides the mechanical key that the plaster coat requires for adhesion. Without it, wet plaster would sag and crack under its own weight, especially across spans where the curve prevents simple perpendicular support.

The framework consists of two sets of parallel wood strips, typically 1 inch by 1.5 inches in cross-section, laid perpendicular to each other in a grid pattern. The strips follow the curve of the ceiling, with their spacing determined by the width of the laths to be nailed on top, usually 3 to 6 inches apart. This creates a strong, flexible grid that can follow complex geometry, from simple barrel vaults to intricate cove moldings and domed surfaces.

Installation and Variants

The criss-cross arrangement distributes loads across multiple directions and prevents the plaster from crushing the laths at any single point. In arched ceilings, the cradling must be bent or built up in sections to follow the curve; in more elaborate work, strips may be steam-bent or the grid may be assembled in flat pieces that are then curved as a unit. The depth of the grid (distance from the ceiling surface to the plaster face) determines how much structural reserve exists and how much wire or lath can be embedded.

Common failures occur when cradling is spaced too far apart, allowing lath to sag between supports, or when the wood is not properly secured to the structural framing above. Movement in the building frame or excessive moisture can cause the wood to work and split the plaster above. In restoration work, failed cradling often must be rebuilt entirely because repairs to isolated sections rarely stop cracking in the surrounding plaster.

The term reflects the function: the wooden grid "cradles" or gently supports the weight of the plaster coat in a curved geometry. This contrasts with simple flat ceiling construction, where joists run perpendicular to the direction of the span. Cradling appears frequently in high-end residential work, historic buildings, and institutional architecture where arched or coffered ceilings are part of the design.
