Cue: the signal that starts the action

In energy and utilities operations, a cue is a scheduled signal or trigger point that initiates a planned action or state change in a system. This might be the moment a generator ramps up output, a pump switches on, a valve opens, or a recording device activates to log performance data. Cues are typically tied to time, load demand, or sensor readings, and they anchor the synchronization of distributed equipment across a facility or network.

Cues operate within broader dispatch and control frameworks. In power plants, a cue might trigger the transition from standby to active generation, or signal the start of a maintenance cycle. In water treatment facilities, a cue could initiate backwashing of filters at set intervals or shift between storage tanks based on pressure thresholds. The cue itself is often invisible to field operators, embedded in automated control logic or sent as a digital command from a central SCADA system to remote terminal units (RTUs) at substations or pump stations.

Timing precision matters enormously. A cue that arrives too early can cause unnecessary equipment cycling and wear; one that arrives too late can allow pressures to drop, flows to fall, or safety margins to erode. In grid operations, generation cues must align with load forecasts and occur within milliseconds of their scheduled moment to maintain voltage stability. Cues can fail if communication lines are damaged, if control software contains logic errors, or if the equipment receiving the cue is faulty or offline.

The term itself carries over from theatrical and broadcast practice, where a cue is the signal for an actor or technician to begin. In utilities, the metaphor is apt: a cue is the director's signal that tells the next performer to take the stage. Operators and engineers speak casually of "taking a cue" from a sensor reading or "missing a cue" when equipment does not respond to its trigger, language that reveals how deeply the performance model shapes industrial thinking.

Cues are documented in operating procedures, relay settings, and automation schedules. They form the backbone of predictable, repeatable system behavior. When systems fail to respond to cues, or when cues themselves fail to transmit, the result is often operator confusion and manual override, both of which introduce risk. Understanding where cues are generated, how they are transmitted, and what happens downstream when they arrive is essential for anyone troubleshooting control system failures.
