A daisywheel printer is an impact printer that produces characters by rotating a wheel studded with raised type slugs, each shaped like a complete letter or numeral, and striking them against an inked ribbon onto paper. The wheel resembles a daisy flower, hence the name. Unlike a typewriter's fixed character set, the entire wheel spins to position the needed character at a hammer position before each keystroke, making it a compromise between the rigid mechanics of traditional type and the flexibility of later technologies.

The wheel itself, typically 3 to 4 inches in diameter, was made of plastic or lightweight metal and carried 88 to 100 characters arranged radially around its edge. Common arrangements included upper and lower case letters, numerals 0-9, and punctuation marks. To print a single character, the wheel rotated until the correct slug aligned with a spring-loaded hammer and ribbon cartridge. The hammer then fired, driving the character into the ribbon and onto the paper below. Print quality was sharp and consistent, typically 10 or 12 characters per inch, which made these machines popular for business correspondence where appearance mattered.

Daisywheel printers were common in office environments from the mid 1970s through the 1980s, particularly paired with word processors and early personal computers. They were valued for producing letter-quality output with interchangeable wheels that allowed font changes without mechanical reconfiguration. However, they were slow, typically printing 25 to 50 words per minute, and noisy due to the constant mechanical hammering. Speed and noise both increased substantially as text volume grew, making them impractical for high-volume printing or continuous operation.

Daisywheel printers were rapidly displaced by dot-matrix printers in the 1980s, which were faster and cheaper, and later by thermal and inkjet technologies that produced acceptable quality at far higher speeds. By the late 1980s, the daisywheel had become economically obsolete. The term survives primarily in historical documentation and the technical vocabulary of older industrial systems; rare units still operate in specialized applications where mechanical simplicity and character-by-character control remain advantageous.

The design principle of the daisywheel influenced later character-printing concepts but did not evolve further. Modern impact printers, where they persist, use drum or train mechanisms that are more efficient. The daisywheel remains a textbook example of mechanical printer evolution and appears occasionally in discussions of input/output peripheral history.
