A day level is a horizontal or nearly horizontal tunnel driven into a hillside from the surface, allowing miners and material to move in and out without climbing a shaft. Unlike a vertical shaft that requires hoisting equipment, a day level uses gravity to move ore and waste downhill, and workers can walk or ride out under their own power. This simple geometry made day levels the default entry into shallow deposits before mechanical hoisting became standard.
The term reflects the practical reality: miners enter at dawn and exit before dark, traveling along the level rather than being lowered and raised. A true day level runs close to horizontal, with a gentle grade (typically 1 in 10 to 1 in 20) to assist drainage and material movement. The portal, or entrance, sits on the surface where the mine meets the hillside. If the deposit dips deeper into the mountain, multiple day levels may be driven at different elevations, each one a floor of the mine, with ore from higher levels passing through lower levels on its way out.
Why day levels persist
Even in modern mines with deep vertical shafts, day levels remain valuable for ventilation, emergency escape, and bulk ore haulage. A day level costs less to sink than a shaft and avoids the mechanical failure risk of hoists. On steep terrain, a single long day level can reach ore that would require two or three shafts at different elevations. The downside is length: a day level to a deposit 500 feet deep and a quarter mile into the mountain will itself be a quarter mile of tunnel, requiring significant timbering and maintenance.
Day levels work best in hard rock where the ground stays stable without constant support. In soft ground or fractured rock, the unsupported span and weight of the roof demand more timber, prop caches, and regular inspection. Water is another enemy: a day level below water table will require continuous pumping or a drainage sump at the lower end. The slope of the hillside and the depth of the target ore body determine whether a day level is practical or wasteful compared to sinking a shaft.
The name has survived despite modern mining's shift toward mechanized hoisting because the distinction remains operationally real. A shaft mine and a day level mine differ in layout, haulage, ventilation, and escape routes. In coal mining, day levels driven into hillsides remain common in smaller operations and where terrain favors them. In hard rock mining, they appear alongside shafts in the same deposit, each serving a different part of the ore body or a different phase of extraction.
