decaampere: ten amps, rarely seen in real work

A decaampere is a unit of electric current equal to 10 amperes (10 A). It exists as part of the SI metric system and carries the symbol daA, following the standard metric prefix deca, which multiplies the base unit by 10. In principle it represents the current flowing through a conductor when 10 coulombs of charge pass a point each second.

Unlike milliamps and microamps, which appear constantly in electronics and instrumentation, or kiloamps, which show up in high-voltage distribution and arc welding, the decaampere occupies an awkward middle ground where it is rarely the natural unit of choice. Most industrial current measurements cluster at smaller scales (fractional amps in precision circuits, tens to hundreds of amps in motors and machinery) or larger scales (kiloamps in substations). As a result, the decaampere remains almost entirely confined to theoretical discussions, standards documentation, and education rather than field practice.

The decaampere exists because SI metric practice requires systematic prefixes at every factor-of-10 increment. The ampere itself, named after the physicist André-Marie Ampère, is the base unit. The deca prefix (from Latin decem, meaning ten) applies uniformly across all SI quantities: decameter, decaliter, decawatt. Internal consistency in the system matters more than practical utility in every application, so the decaampere has its place even if workers never call for one.

Confusion sometimes arises with the decampere or decamper, which are not real units and appear only in careless writing or translation error. Specifications and calibration certificates should always use daA when the symbol is required, though the full term decaampere is clearer in technical prose where symbol ambiguity might occur.
