To cut with dies; to use a die to shear webs of low-strength material.

Die-cutting is a high-force shearing process that stamps shaped holes or cuts through low-strength materials by pressing a hardened steel form, called a die, straight down through the stock. Unlike a blade, which slides, a die sits flat against the material and cuts by pure downward pressure. The process works on paper, cardboard, leather, thin rubber, plastic film, and felt, materials that yield cleanly without tearing or fraying when struck rather than slit.

A die consists of a steel punch in the exact shape you want to remove, mounted on a backing plate, with a stripper plate above it to push the waste material back out after each cut. The material sits on a baseplate, and the die descends under hydraulic or mechanical force, ranging from a few tons for thin paper to 50 tons or more for thick cardboard. In rotary die-cutting, the die wraps around a cylinder and runs continuously through a web, feeding and ejecting material automatically. Flatbed die-cutters work one piece at a time and are common in converting shops where custom shapes are frequent.

Common failures include dull die edges, which tear rather than cut cleanly and require stripping force so high that the backing plate flexes and cuts go crooked. The baseplate wears down gradually as the die hammers it; it must be resurfaced every few months depending on run volume. Stripper springs weaken after millions of cycles, leaving scrap stuck to the die. Pressure settings matter enormously: too light and the cut is incomplete; too heavy and the die chips or the material crushes instead of cutting.

The name comes from the fact that you are cutting with a die, not in a die as you might with a punch press. Industry uses the verb loosely: a label die-cut from a roll, a gasket die-cut from sheet rubber, a window die-cut from a box blank. The term is also used as a noun for both the tool and the finished part: "the window is a die-cut" means it was made with a die-cutting tool.

Die-cutting sits between precision stamping and hand cutting in the manufacturing flow. It is faster and cheaper than stamping for short runs because dies are simple and quick to make, yet far faster than hand tools for medium volumes. It demands tight tolerance on material thickness because pressure is fixed; thin spots cut cleanly while thick spots jam. Material grain and direction matter too: some materials cut better along the grain, others across it, and die makers must account for creep and springback.
