diff lock: forces both axle shafts to spin at the same speed

A diff lock is a mechanism that mechanically couples the left and right axle shafts on a vehicle axle, forcing them to rotate together at identical speeds. In normal operation, an open differential allows each wheel to spin at different rates, which is essential for turning corners. A diff lock overrides this and binds the shafts solid, so both wheels receive equal torque regardless of traction differences between them.

The most common type uses a sliding collar or clutch pack actuated by a lever, cable, or electric solenoid from the cab. Manual locking differentials, found on work trucks and off-road vehicles, engage with a physical lever. Air-actuated and electronic variants are common on heavy equipment, dump trucks, and mining machinery. Some designs use helical gears or spools that lock automatically under extreme torque. The engagement takes less than a second and produces an audible clunk as the pawls or teeth lock into position.

When and why it matters

A diff lock is essential when traction is uneven: mud, snow, rocks, or steep grades on one side. Without locking, the wheel with less grip spins freely while the other wheel receives minimal torque, leaving the vehicle stuck. Once locked, both wheels drive the load equally. This is why diff locks are standard on agricultural tractors, forestry equipment, and construction vehicles that work on marginal terrain. On road vehicles, a diff lock is used only intermittently and disengaged before normal driving, since it causes tire scrubbing and handling problems on pavement.

The trade-off is real: on-road handling becomes twitchy and tire wear accelerates. Locking both wheels also removes the automatic speed compensation that normally prevents one tire from scrubbing sideways during a turn. For this reason, locking differentials are typically locked only when stuck or in extreme low-speed maneuvers, then unlocked as soon as traction improves.

The term "diff lock" is universal shop shorthand; the full name "locking differential" is used in formal documentation. Some older equipment uses regional names like "locker" or "lockup." The mechanism has been in use since the early days of four-wheel-drive trucks and remains one of the simplest and most reliable traction aids available.
