DRCP: rapid network config for clustered switches

DRCP stands for Dynamic Rapid Configuration Protocol. It is an IEEE 802.1AX extension that allows a host or server to form a single logical link aggregation group (LAG) across multiple switches without requiring those switches to be directly connected to each other. Where traditional LAG requires all member ports to terminate on the same physical switch, DRCP lets you spread ports across separate switches in a cluster, making the host see them as one unified link.

The protocol works by having a DRCP gateway on each switch exchange state information and coordinate the port selection algorithm. When a host sends traffic, DRCP ensures that frames destined for the logical aggregation are distributed across all participating switches in the same way they would be across ports on a single switch. The gateway handles convergence and failure detection, so if one switch in the cluster becomes unavailable, remaining switches adjust their forwarding without dropping the LAG.

Real-world deployment and constraints

DRCP appears most often in data centre environments where ToR (top-of-rack) switch pairs support multiple servers. It eliminates the need for expensive cross-connect cables or a single wider chassis and simplifies cabling when upgrading switches incrementally. However, it adds computational overhead on the switch CPU for state synchronisation, and the switches must support the protocol in both hardware and firmware. Not all enterprise or carrier-grade switches implement it.

The term "dynamic" reflects that DRCP learns and adapts to changes in port state or switch availability without manual reconfiguration. This contrasts with static link aggregation, which requires an operator to specify members explicitly. Convergence time after a link failure typically ranges from tens to hundreds of milliseconds, depending on switch model and the number of active members.

DRCP is distinct from MLAG (multi-chassis LAG), which is a vendor-proprietary term for similar functionality. The IEEE standard ensures interoperability, but implementation details and performance vary between manufacturers. Operators should consult switch datasheets for DRCP limits: maximum members per group, supported topologies, and interaction with other protocols like LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol).
