DRL: lights that stay on whenever the engine runs
Daytime running lights (DRL) are forward-facing lamps that activate automatically whenever the engine starts and the ignition is in the run position, independent of whether the driver has engaged the headlights. They operate at reduced intensity, typically 30 to 50 percent of full headlight brightness, consuming less power while maintaining visibility during daylight hours. Unlike headlights, DRLs cannot be switched off by the driver without turning off the engine.
Most automotive DRLs use either halogen bulbs or light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED DRLs have become standard on new vehicles since the mid-2010s because they draw 3 to 5 watts per lamp compared to 10 to 20 watts for halogen equivalents, reduce heat generation, and last significantly longer. Some manufacturers integrate DRLs as a dedicated circuit within the headlight assembly; others use the low-beam filament at reduced voltage or as a separate LED array.
The primary function is collision avoidance. Studies indicate that DRLs reduce daytime multi-vehicle crashes by 6 to 10 percent, particularly in overcast conditions and at dawn or dusk when vehicle conspicuity drops. Because roughly one-third of serious crashes occur in daylight, regulators in the European Union, Canada, and other jurisdictions have mandated DRLs on all new passenger vehicles since the early 2000s.
Operating behavior and driver interaction
DRL circuits include a light sensor or are hardwired to activate only when ambient light falls below a threshold. The lights switch off automatically when the driver engages the low-beam headlights, or they may remain on at reduced intensity while headlights are active. On some vehicles, parking lights or fog lights can operate independently of the DRL circuit. The behavior varies by manufacturer; some systems allow partial deactivation through vehicle settings menus, but true "off" capability is typically not available to the user.
Troubleshooting DRL faults requires tracing the circuit from the ignition switch through the light sensor (if present), the DRL module or relay, and the lamp itself. Bulb failure is the most common issue; LED array failure is less frequent but more expensive to repair because it usually requires replacement of the entire headlight assembly rather than a single bulb. Check the vehicle service manual for the correct diagnostic sequence, as DRL behavior and circuit architecture differ substantially between manufacturers.
