Drunk driving occurs when a person operates a motor vehicle after consuming enough alcohol to impair their motor control, judgment, and reaction time. The impairment happens gradually as alcohol depresses the central nervous system, affecting the precise coordination and split-second decision-making required for safe vehicle operation.

Law enforcement measures impairment through roadside tests, breathalyzers that measure BAC directly, or blood draws that provide the most precise readings. A BAC of 0.08% means 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. Even at lower BACs, around 0.05% to 0.07%, drivers show measurable declines in steering ability and reduced response to emergency situations. The relationship is not linear across individuals because alcohol metabolism varies with body weight, food intake, and tolerance, but impairment is pharmacologically consistent.

From a collision investigation standpoint, drunk driving introduces patterns recognizable to accident reconstructionists: lane weaving, delayed braking, failure to brake at all before impact, and overcorrection maneuvers. Vehicle damage analysis combined with toxicology results helps establish whether impairment was a contributing factor. Insurance and liability determinations hinge partly on whether blood tests were administered within a legally acceptable timeframe, since BAC rises and falls on a predictable curve after consumption stops.

The term encompasses various substances beyond ethanol, including some over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs that produce sedation or impair cognition. Some regions use the broader term driving under the influence (DUI) or operating under the influence (OUI) to capture this wider scope. Commercial drivers typically face stricter BAC thresholds at 0.04%, reflecting heightened responsibility when operating large vehicles or passenger transport.

Consequences span mechanical prevention (ignition interlock devices that prevent engine start if BAC is detected), administrative penalties (license suspension), criminal liability, and civil judgments. From an occupational safety perspective, employers in transportation and heavy equipment operation must test for alcohol impairment as part of workplace drug screening protocols, particularly after accidents or as part of random testing programs mandated by regulation.
