duplexer

A duplexer is a mechanical or electromechanical attachment fitted to a printer that automatically reverses and re-feeds sheets so that both sides receive print or toner. Without a duplexer, two-sided output requires manual removal, rotation, and reinsertion of each page, or two passes through the printer. The duplexer eliminates this labor and ensures consistent registration and alignment between front and back impressions.

Duplexers are standard on most office laser printers and multifunction devices rated for medium to heavy duty. They work by intercepting the printed sheet after the first pass, holding it briefly, then routing it back into the paper path feed rollers at the correct angle and position. The timing and mechanical sequence must be precise; a faulty duplexer that jams sheets or misaligns pages quickly becomes a production bottleneck. Paper path geometry, sheet weight tolerance, and humidity all affect duplexer performance.

Internal duplexers are built into the printer frame and share the same paper path as single-sided printing. External duplexers, less common now, were bolt-on modules for older equipment. Most modern printers offer duplexer as a factory-installed option or retrofit module. Output tray position matters; sheets must cool or set before reversal to avoid wet toner smudging.

Common failure modes include jamming during the flip and feed cycle, misalignment that causes print on the back to miss the logical page boundary, and worn pickup rollers that lose grip. Technicians inspect the duplexer's clutches, feed solenoid, and sensor flags regularly. Paper cassettes designed for duplex work often feature spring-loaded guides and precise feed wheels; mismatch between paper type and duplexer settings causes many service calls.

The term comes from the Latin root for double, and reflects the device's core function: enabling duplex (two-sided) output. In printing trade language, duplexing is the process itself, while duplexer is the hardware component. Some industrial copiers and production presses integrate far more complex automatic media reversal, but the principle remains the same.
