The dutchman is shaped to match the cavity precisely, then set into place and finished flush with the surrounding surface. It is a permanent repair method, distinct from temporary patching, and relies on accurate shaping rather than adhesive alone to hold.
In wood, a dutchman is typically cut from timber matching the original piece in species, grain direction, and color. The cavity is first routed or chiseled to produce straight sides and a flat bottom, creating a geometric form that the dutchman will fill exactly. Common repairs include filling knots that have fallen out, repairing rot damage, closing checks and cracks, or filling holes left by fasteners or previous repairs. The dutchman is glued in place with hide glue or modern polyurethane adhesive, then planed or sanded flush after the glue sets.
Stone dutchmen follow the same principle but demand greater precision, as stone cannot be planed smooth after installation. The cavity is cut with straight chisel marks or routed with carbide tooling. The dutchman is shaped from a matching stone, often slate, marble, or granite depending on the original material. Once fitted and glued with stone adhesive or mortar, it is ground and polished to match the surrounding surface.
Why the name dutchman remains unclear
The origin of the term is contested. Some sources claim it arose from Dutch joinery traditions, while others suggest it derives from the practice of repair work being assigned to workers of low status, and "Dutch" being used colloquially as a pejorative. The term appears in English woodworking texts by the early 20th century with no clear attestation of earlier use, making its etymology difficult to pin down with certainty.
The dutchman is favored over other repair methods because it remains stable over time, accommodates seasonal wood movement without cracking, and can be executed cleanly on visible surfaces. It is slower and more costly than surface patching, so it is reserved for high-quality cabinetwork, restoration, and exposed structural work where appearance and durability matter.
