An edge rail is a rail profile designed so that the wheel flange (the inward-facing lip on a railway wheel) rolls along the outer edge or vertical face of the rail head, rather than along the top surface. This contrasts with the flat-topped rail common on modern railways, where wheels run on the broad upper surface and flanges serve mainly to keep them centered. Edge rails were the dominant profile in early railway construction, particularly in Britain and on industrial tramways.

The defining feature is the rail's cross-section: it has a narrow, nearly vertical rolling surface on one or both sides, with the flange of the wheel bearing against this edge face. The weight of the carriage is supported through the wheel-to-rail contact, held in place by the sideways pressure of the flange. This design was practical for slow-speed operations and worked well on light tracks because it reduced the lateral forces transmitted to the track structure itself.

Edge rails saw heavy use on colliery railways, quarry lines, and early urban tramways through the 19th century. They were often laid in granite setts or directly on road surfaces, embedded flush so that carts with ordinary wheels could run beside them. The rail profile consumed less iron than modern designs, making them economical when metal was expensive. Gradual replacement by flat-topped rails came as speeds increased and heavier loads demanded better wheel support and more predictable dynamics.

The term remains in historical and heritage railway contexts. Modern edge-rail technology is effectively obsolete for revenue service, though replicas are maintained on museum lines. Variants included double-flanged wheels running on both rail edges simultaneously, giving extra security on steep inclines or sharp curves. The legacy persists in industrial settings: some modern overhead monorail systems and some specialized material-handling tracks still use edge-running principles.

Edge rails impose different wear patterns and maintenance demands than modern rail. The narrow running surface concentrates load into a small area, accelerating wear; conversely, the compact profile made them easier to lift and reposition by hand during track work. Understanding edge rail heritage is essential when working with preserved railways or interpreting industrial archaeological sites.
