An engine shed is a large roofed building where steam locomotives, and later diesel locomotives, are stored, maintained, and serviced when not in operation. The structure typically consists of a single or multi-track floor with a high roof to accommodate the full height of locomotives, usually 13 to 14 feet or more. The walls are often open-sided or semi-open to allow locomotives to be driven straight in and out without requiring elaborate turntables in every stall.

The typical layout places multiple locomotives side by side on parallel tracks, with a central inspection pit or channel running beneath the tracks to allow workers to access the underside. Repair facilities, tool rooms, and water storage tanks are integral parts of the complex. Coaling towers or ash disposal pits were common additions at sheds serving steam locomotives, positioned to allow rapid turnaround between shifts. The building itself must support vibration and occasional minor impacts from shunting operations.

The work that happens inside

Engine sheds performed routine servicing: topping up water in boilers, emptying ashpans, checking brake systems, and replacing worn components like brake blocks and valve rings. Major overhauls requiring complete disassembly happened in dedicated locomotive works rather than in the shed, but the shed was where daily fitness checks occurred. Locomotive crews also prepared engines for their next duty, a process called raising steam for steam locomotives. A skilled locoman or shed master coordinated work and maintained records of each locomotive's condition.

The term engine shed became dated as steam locomotives were retired in most countries by the 1960s and 1970s. Diesel and electric locomotives required different servicing regimes and were often housed in purpose-built depots with inspection pits, lifting equipment, and climate control. Modern rail facilities use the term depot or stabling facility, though railway enthusiasts and heritage railways still use engine shed for heritage steam complexes.

Regional railway networks each operated their own engine sheds, creating a hierarchy: small sheds handled basic maintenance and overnight stabling, while large main-line sheds at major junctions performed more complex repairs. The shed was a distinct social space within the railway company, with its own hierarchy of workers and its own culture of practical knowledge passed from experienced men to apprentices. The building itself was often one of the largest structures in a small railway town.
