The enter key is a separate confirmation button found on the right side of extended keyboards, specifically within or immediately adjacent to the numeric keypad. Unlike the return key on the main alphanumeric section, the enter key serves a distinct function in data entry workflows, particularly in industrial control systems, manufacturing terminals, and point-of-sale equipment. On a standard 104-key extended keyboard, it sits to the right of the zero key on the numeric pad and triggers a carriage return with different software behavior than the main return key.

In industrial settings, the enter key is critical for confirming numeric input sequences. Manufacturing supervisors use it to submit production quantities into control systems; warehouse workers use it to finalize barcode scans; operators at CNC machines use it to lock in coordinate values. The key's isolated position on the numeric pad allows operators wearing gloves or working in contaminated environments to find and press it reliably without looking away from their display. Its larger size compared to standard keys reduces accidental adjacent-key presses during rapid data entry.

Variants and Layout Differences

Not all enter keys behave identically. Some industrial keyboards feature an oversized enter key that spans two rows of the numeric pad for additional target area. Compact or notebook keyboards omit the numeric pad entirely, merging enter functionality with the main return key. Programmable industrial terminals allow the enter key to trigger custom macros or database commits, making its function context dependent. On European keyboards, the enter key is sometimes labeled Return rather than Enter, though the position and function remain consistent.

Problems arise when the enter key becomes sluggish or unresponsive from dust accumulation or liquid spill. Because numeric entry workflows often demand rapid confirmation sequences, a sticky enter key can bottleneck production. Mechanical keyboards with hot-swap switches make repair straightforward; membrane keyboards require full replacement. In ruggedized industrial keypads, the enter key is typically sealed with a silicone or polyurethane membrane to resist ingress of coolant, particulate, or moisture.

The distinction between enter and return reflects their separate origins: the return key comes from typewriter carriages, while enter derives from computer command syntax. In modern terminal environments and industrial software, the enter key typically submits a completed data field or executes a queued command, whereas return on the main keyboard often just inserts a line break. This separation prevents accidental field submission during text editing, making extended keyboards the standard for any facility where speed and accuracy in numeric entry determine throughput.
