An envelope detector is a circuit that extracts the modulating signal from an amplitude modulated (AM) carrier wave. It strips away the high-frequency oscillations and leaves behind the original lower-frequency information, typically audio. The simplest form uses a diode and an RC filter: the diode rectifies the incoming signal, allowing current to flow in only one direction, while the capacitor charges and discharges at the rate of the envelope rather than the carrier frequency.
The performance of an envelope detector depends critically on the relationship between the RC time constant and the signal frequencies involved. The time constant must be slow enough that the capacitor follows the envelope without sagging between carrier cycles, but fast enough that it can track the modulating signal without distortion. This becomes problematic at low modulation frequencies, where the capacitor may discharge too slowly and introduce significant ripple into the output. A resistor value in the range of 10 kilohms to 1 megohm is typical, paired with a capacitor of 0.01 to 10 microfarads, depending on the carrier and modulation frequencies.
The choice of diode matters. A germanium diode, which has a forward voltage drop around 0.3 volts, produces less distortion than a silicon diode at 0.7 volts, particularly when working with weak incoming signals. However, germanium diodes have higher reverse leakage current and worse temperature stability. For precision applications, a vacuum tube or a more sophisticated synchronous detector may be required to recover weak or noisy AM signals with acceptable fidelity.
Envelope detectors appear throughout radio receivers, test instruments, and industrial measurement systems. A portable AM radio uses one to extract audio from broadcast signals. In instrumentation, they demodulate signals from sensors that use AM telemetry. They are also found in peak detectors and in systems that need to measure the amplitude of modulated signals at a single point in time. The term 'envelope' refers to the outer boundary traced by the peaks of the oscillating carrier wave as its amplitude changes over time.
Modern designs sometimes employ active envelope detectors using operational amplifiers, which provide better performance than passive diode circuits. These can maintain more precise control over the charging and discharging rates and can compensate for component nonlinearities. However, the passive envelope detector remains common in cost-sensitive applications and in radio frequency front ends where simplicity and low power consumption are priorities.
