ERP: the actual electromagnetic reach of a transmitter
Effective radiated power measures the power actually broadcast by a radio transmitter in its preferred direction, accounting for antenna gain. Unlike the raw transmitter output, ERP combines transmitter watts with the directional amplification of the antenna system. A 1 kW transmitter feeding a directional antenna with 6 dB gain appears to radiate with the power of a 4 kW system broadcasting equally in all directions. This makes ERP the legally meaningful measure for spectrum regulators and engineers who need to predict coverage in the real world.
ERP appears in two closely related forms. Effective radiated power refers to the main lobe of directional antennas and is the traditional measure used in AM radio and television broadcasting. Equivalent radiated power uses the same calculation but applies to antennas that radiate in all horizontal directions equally. Both terms describe the same physics: transmitter power in watts multiplied by antenna gain (expressed as a linear ratio, not dB). A transmitter with 10 W output and a 10 dB antenna gain delivers 100 W ERP in the strongest direction.
Why ERP matters for licensing and compliance
Regulators assign ERP limits rather than transmitter power limits because they care about the field strength experienced by receivers, not the internal power of the equipment. FM stations, for example, are licensed to specific ERP values; a station might operate at 50 kW ERP but achieve this with a 10 kW transmitter and a directional antenna. Exceeding the licensed ERP violates spectrum rules and can create interference across wide areas. Field strength at a given distance depends directly on ERP, not on what happens inside the transmitter enclosure.
Calculating ERP requires knowing the transmitter power output, antenna gain, and cable losses between them. Cable losses are treated as negative gain and typically range from 1 to 3 dB depending on frequency, cable type, and run length. A technician measuring or verifying ERP must measure transmitter power at the antenna input terminals or account for the attenuation of the feed line. The antenna gain figure comes from the antenna datasheet and varies with frequency; a given physical antenna radiates differently at 88 MHz than at 108 MHz.
In practice, transmitter output power is set or measured using a directional wattmeter placed in the antenna feed line. This meter reads forward power, and the operator or system calculates ERP from that reading, antenna gain, and known cable loss. Some broadcast equipment includes ERP readout directly, computing it from these component values. Confusion between ERP and transmitter power is common in informal conversation, but they are distinct quantities and conflating them leads to compliance errors and coverage miscalculations.
