featherboard

A flat grooved piece of wood or other material used to hold the workpiece in position.

A featherboard is a thin wooden strip, usually between 0.25 and 0.5 inches thick, with parallel kerfs (saw cuts) running most of its length. These cuts create flexible fingers, or feathers, that spring inward with light pressure. Clamped to the table of a table saw, jointer, or router table at a shallow angle, it holds a workpiece firmly against the fence or table without restricting forward movement. The feathers bend as the wood passes through, then spring back to grip it again, preventing creep, kickback, and lateral drift.

The tool exists because machines that feed wood parallel to a spinning blade or cutter create lateral forces that push the workpiece away from the fence. A conventional clamp or vise would stop all movement, defeating the purpose of power feeding; a featherboard lets you feed continuously while still maintaining contact. On a table saw ripping operation, it is invaluable for maintaining consistent distance from the blade. On a jointer, it keeps the wood flat against the outfeed table and prevents the knives from chattering the surface. On a router table, it stabilizes the workpiece during edge profiling.

Shop Practice and Variants

Featherboards are almost always made on-site by the user, cut from hardwood or hardwood-faced plywood. A standard design uses a straight board 12 to 24 inches long, with the kerf pattern occupying the final 6 to 10 inches, spaced roughly 0.25 to 0.375 inches apart and running to within about 1 inch of the far end. Some woodworkers cut feathers at a slight taper to vary the spring pressure along the length. Commercial versions exist but are less common; homemade boards can be tuned for specific stock thickness and wood type. The board is then clamped to the machine table at an angle of 45 to 60 degrees to the fence, with the feather tips just touching the workpiece. Pressure should be moderate, enough to prevent movement but not so much that it burns or bruises the wood.

Featherboards are subject to wear and charring from friction with heated wood passing at speed, especially on table saws where the blade generates significant heat. The kerf edges dull and crush over time, reducing spring pressure; replacement every few years is typical in a busy shop. Care must be taken never to use a featherboard alone as the sole means of control for a narrow or short piece, since fingers can still reach the blade if leverage causes rotation. It is a holding aid, not a safety device on its own, and must always be paired with proper handfeeding technique and awareness of the cutterhead.

The name derives from the resemblance of the slotted, springing fingers to the barbs of a feather. The concept is old; references to feathered or sprung holddowns appear in woodworking literature from the late 19th century. Modern versions are standard equipment in any serious woodshop, yet many machinists and production shops also use them on metal-working benches when the work material and cutter geometry permit, clamping them to drill presses or milling machines to steady thin sheet stock or castings during repetitive cuts.
