feedline: fuel delivery plumbing under pressure
A feedline is a rigid or flexible tube that carries fuel from the tank to the fuel pump, fuel filter, pressure regulator, and injectors or carburetor. In modern vehicles, the feedline operates at pressures between 40 and 80 pounds per square inch (psi), depending on the injection system, and must maintain that pressure reliably over hundreds of thousands of miles without leaking or degrading.
Feedlines are typically made from seamless steel tubing, nylon, or reinforced rubber hose, each with tradeoffs. Steel feedlines resist corrosion and withstand high pressure but are rigid and prone to kinking if bent sharply. Rubber hose is flexible and absorbs vibration but degrades over time from ethanol-blended fuel, heat, and ultraviolet exposure; hose sections usually need replacement every 10 to 15 years even if the rest of the fuel system holds up.
Common failure modes and variants
Feedline failures fall into two broad categories. Leaks occur at connection points where hose clamps loosen, rubber cracks, or seals fail; fuel odor or visible drips under the vehicle are warning signs. Blockages develop when rust particles from the tank, sediment, or gum deposits restrict flow, starving the injectors or carburetor of fuel and causing hard starting, hesitation, or stalling. Older vehicles with steel tanks are especially prone to rust; modern tanks use plastic or coated steel.
The term feedline emphasizes the supply direction, from storage to consumption. Diagrams often distinguish it from the return line, which carries excess fuel or fuel that has cycled through the regulator back to the tank. In carburetor systems, the feedline pressure is relatively low, around 3 to 5 psi, and the carburetor itself meters the flow. In port and direct injection systems, the feedline pressure is regulated precisely and the injectors meter individual pulses, so feedline integrity and filter cleanliness matter more.
Routine inspection includes checking for leaks, listening for fuel pump noise (which should be a steady hum when the key is on), and noting any smell of gasoline around the tank or under the vehicle. Feedline replacement is straightforward on most vehicles but requires care to prevent spilling fuel and to ensure new connections are properly crimped or torqued according to the manufacturer's specification.
