A flash drive is a data storage device built around NAND flash memory chips, typically housed in a plastic or metal casing with a USB connector. It holds between 8 gigabytes and 2 terabytes of data and connects directly to a computer or industrial controller without requiring external power or a separate enclosure. Because it has no moving parts, no spinning platters, and no mechanical read/write heads, it is far more rugged than a hard disk drive and can survive drops, vibration, and temperature swings common in shop floors and field deployments.

Flash drives come in several physical forms. The most common is a straight USB Type-A stick around 2 inches long. Industrial variants include drives with Type-C or micro-USB connectors for embedded systems, drives with reinforced connectors rated for thousands of insertion cycles, and encapsulated models potted in epoxy to withstand oil, dust, and moisture. Capacity affects price and speed roughly linearly: a 64 GB drive costs less and operates slower than a 512 GB drive from the same manufacturer.

In industrial use, flash drives serve as bootable media for system installation, as removable storage for machine logs and calibration data, and as offline transfer vehicles in environments where network access is restricted. A typical workflow sends a technician to site with a pre-imaged drive to load firmware or retrieve diagnostic dumps. Read speeds typically range from 100 to 500 megabytes per second on modern USB 3.1 drives; write speeds are usually 50 to 200 MB/s. The actual performance depends on the quality of the controller chip and memory chips inside, not just the USB generation.

Failure modes and limitations

Flash drives degrade over time. The floating-gate transistors that store charge have a finite number of write cycles, typically rated between 100,000 and 1,000,000 cycles per cell before bit errors accumulate. This matters more for drives used heavily in test equipment or data logging than for static archives. Physical loss is the real risk in the field: drives are easily misplaced, stolen, or wiped accidentally. Industrial sites often restrict their use or require encryption, full-disk logging, and physical tracking.

The term "flash" refers to the type of memory, not the speed. Flash memory is a non-volatile semiconductor technology that erases in bulk (in blocks) rather than individually. This made early flash slower but cheaper and more reliable than EEPROM for large storage. USB sticks became ubiquitous in the 2000s as manufacturing costs fell and capacities grew. Today they are standard issue on every industrial maintenance cart and in most control cabinets for emergency firmware recovery.
