A flasher is an electromechanical or electronic device that interrupts electrical current at regular intervals, producing the blinking effect of a vehicle's turn signals or hazard lights. It sits in the fuse box or relay panel and receives power from the battery whenever a driver activates a turn signal or hazard switch. The flasher's job is to break that circuit roughly once per second, creating the visual pulse that other drivers recognize as an intention to turn or as a warning of trouble.
Traditional flashers use a bimetallic strip, a thin sandwich of two metals with different thermal expansion rates. Current flows through the strip, heating it until the differential expansion bends it enough to open the circuit. The strip then cools, springs back, and closes the circuit again. This mechanical cycle repeats at approximately 80 to 120 flashes per minute, depending on the flasher's design and the resistance load of the bulbs attached to it. Newer vehicles use electronic flashers with integrated circuits, which eliminate mechanical wear and offer faster, more reliable switching.
A key design principle of flashers is load-sensing. If a turn signal bulb burns out, the reduced electrical load can cause the flasher to stop working or to flash at an erratic rate; this failure mode actually serves as a diagnostic cue to drivers and technicians that a bulb needs replacement. Modern flashers are often calibrated for the total bulb wattage of a given circuit, typically 20 to 40 watts. When LED bulbs became common, many older flashers malfunctioned because LEDs draw far less current; newer vehicles and aftermarket flashers now accommodate the lower draw of LEDs.
The flasher's electrical rating, measured in amps or by bulb wattage capacity, must match the circuit it controls. A 12-volt turn signal circuit typically runs through a flasher rated for 10 to 20 amps. Heavy-duty vehicles or commercial trucks may use heavier-duty flashers rated for higher loads. Flashers are usually cylindrical or plug-shaped components about 1 to 2 inches long, and they clip or socket into a relay panel for easy replacement without tools.
Flasher failures manifest as either no blinking (circuit stays open or closed), continuous illumination without blinking, or erratic flashing speed. The problem can stem from the flasher itself, a blown bulb, a corroded socket, or loose wiring upstream. Because flasher functionality is regulated by vehicle safety standards in most jurisdictions, a non-working turn signal or hazard lamp must be repaired before a vehicle passes inspection. The flasher is one of the cheapest and simplest components to replace on any vehicle, typically costing under twenty dollars and requiring only a few seconds to swap out.
