A flooder is a channel or pipe that distributes water across a field in flood irrigation, the oldest and simplest form of large-scale crop watering. Unlike drip systems or sprinklers that apply water precisely, flooders move large volumes of water from a main line into furrows, between rows, or across flat land, allowing it to spread and soak into the soil. The system relies on gravity and the natural slope of the ground; water flows from the flooder into prepared channels and is allowed to stand and permeate until the soil has absorbed enough moisture.
Flooders take several physical forms depending on field layout and crop type. The simplest is an open concrete or earthen channel that runs along the high side of the field and spills water sideways into furrows. More refined versions use perforated pipe or gated pipe, where holes or slide gates along the length let water escape at measured intervals. Some flooders are rigid; others are flexible lay-flat hose that can be repositioned season to season. Discharge rates typically range from a few hundred to several thousand gallons per minute, depending on the number of rows and the soil type being irrigated.
The main limitation of flooders is water loss and inefficiency. As water sits and moves across the surface, it evaporates; it also runs off downslope if the ground is too steep or flows unevenly if the field is not precisely leveled. Labor costs are high because someone must monitor the process, close gates when sections are saturated, and open them downstream. This method works best on flat or gently sloping land and in climates where the cost of large volumes of water is low. It remains standard for pasture, alfalfa, cotton, and rice in the western United States, parts of Australia, and irrigation-dependent regions worldwide.
Common problems include uneven water distribution, silting or debris clogging the perforations, and damage to the flooder from field equipment. Gated pipe can lose alignment or jam if gates are not maintained. Open channels must be checked for breaks and seepage, and vegetation growth inside them must be controlled. In arid regions, mineral deposits can build up and restrict flow.
The term flooder comes directly from the method: it is the device that produces flooding as an irrigation technique. The word predates modern sprinkler and drip terminology and remains in use because the practice itself has not been displaced, particularly in regions where water is abundant relative to cost and where field geometry suits gravity distribution.
