A flotation collar is a collar construction where a layer of interlining material is cut to the exact shape of the finished collar and sewn around its perimeter to the shell fabric, typically cotton or a cotton blend. The interlining floats between the outer fabric and an inner lining layer, held in place only at the edges. This method creates a collar that maintains its shape during wear and washing without requiring a full fusible bond across the entire area.
The interlining is usually a medium-weight woven or nonwoven cotton-based material, often around 35 to 50 grams per square meter. The collar shell and undercollar (or lining) are stitched together in a sandwich with the interlining between them, typically using a row of straight stitching 6 to 8 millimeters from the outer edge. Once sewn, the collar is turned and pressed, creating a crisp edge without the need for topstitching close to the perimeter.
When flotation collars work best
They are most common in dress shirts and casual button-ups where a softer hand feel is valued, or where the fabric weight makes a full fused interlining too stiff or prone to bubbling. Because the interlining does not fuse to the fabric, there is no risk of adhesive degradation during repeated washing or dry cleaning. The collar can be easily replaced during garment repair without damaging the original shell.Flotation collars perform worst in high-stress applications where the collar must hold a precise point or stand for extended periods without rolling or curling at the edges. If the stitching line is set too far from the perimeter, the interlining can shift or wrinkle during wear. Heavier fabrics or looser weaves may not hold a sharp crease at the roll line without additional undercollar stitching or a reinforcing strip.
The term reflects the fact that the interlining layer essentially floats unsupported within the collar structure, anchored only along its boundary. This differs from a fused collar, where adhesive bonds the interlining across its entire surface, or a stitched-through collar, where multiple rows of stitching run the length of the collar to hold the interlining in place. Flotation construction sits between these two methods in terms of labor, cost, and finished hand feel.
