The act or practice of putting into focus.

focalization: making light converge to a sharp point

Focalization is the process of concentrating light rays, or sometimes other radiation, to converge at a single point or narrow region called the focal point. In optical systems, this convergence creates a sharp image or concentrates energy in a small area. Lenses, mirrors, and other optical elements perform focalization by bending or reflecting incoming rays according to their shape and the refractive index of their material.

In imaging applications, focalization determines image sharpness and contrast. A camera lens or microscope objective focuses light from an object onto a sensor or film plane; moving the lens closer to or farther from the sensor changes where the light converges, either sharpening or blurring the image. The distance from the lens to the focal point is the focal length, measured in millimeters for camera lenses. Incorrect focalization produces out-of-focus images with soft edges and lost detail.

Outside imaging, focalization concentrates energy for specific purposes. Solar concentrators use curved mirrors or lenses to focus sunlight onto a small area, raising temperatures high enough for thermal applications. Lasers rely on focalization optics to produce high-intensity beams; a defocused laser spreads its power over a wider area and loses cutting or welding capability. Telescopes use focalization to gather faint light from distant objects and concentrate it into the observer's eye or detector.

Aberrations degrade focalization in real systems. Spherical aberration occurs when rays passing through the edge of a curved lens focus at a different distance than rays through the center, creating a blurry focal region rather than a true point. Chromatic aberration happens because different wavelengths of light refract at slightly different angles, splitting white light into color fringes at the focal plane. Correcting these faults requires careful lens design, use of multiple lens elements, or selection of materials with specific optical properties.

The term focalization comes from the Latin focus, meaning hearth or fireplace, originally applied to the point where light concentrates like heat from a fire. The word became standard in optics during the 17th century as microscopes and telescopes became practical instruments. Older texts sometimes use the term focusing to describe the practical adjustment of optical systems, while focalization refers more formally to the phenomenon itself and the quality or completeness of that convergence.
