Foxing is the appearance of brown or reddish spots on the surface of printed paper, typically circular and ranging from pinhead to several millimeters in diameter. The spots are caused by iron oxide formation and fungal growth within the paper fibers, accelerated by moisture, heat, and chemical residues. It occurs on paper that has already been printed and bound, making it a finishing concern rather than a press problem.

The mechanism involves iron particles (ferric compounds) naturally present in most wood pulps or introduced during papermaking. In the presence of moisture and slightly acidic conditions, these particles oxidize to form rust-like stains. Lignin in lower-grade papers also promotes the reaction. Fungal spores colonize the damp fibers around these oxidized spots, creating the characteristic halo effect. Some foxing is chemical; other instances are purely biological.

Prevention and Materials

Quality printers and publishers minimize foxing by specifying acid-free paper, which reduces chemical degradation pathways. Low iron content pulps help, though cost and availability vary. Proper storage temperature (below 20 degrees Celsius) and humidity control (35 to 50 percent relative humidity) in warehousing and retail environments are critical. High-quality binding and case materials that breathe slowly reduce the moisture cycling that triggers both oxidation and fungal growth.

Foxing is particularly visible on white or cream stock and nearly invisible on heavily printed areas or dark papers. Books printed before 1850, when acid pulping became standard, show severe foxing; modern acid-free editions of classic texts often look pristine decades after printing. The term's origin is uncertain but likely refers to the rusty fox-brown color of the spots.

Once foxing appears, it is permanent and cannot be removed without damaging the page. This makes it a quality issue rather than a defect to be remedied. Libraries and collectors understand that foxing signals environmental stress or paper deficiency, not a printing failure. For long-term reading copies, acid-free paper and controlled storage are the only effective tools.
