A rock that has been brecciated, metamorphosed, or otherwise transformed to the point where its origin cannot be recognized.

Fubarite is a rock that has been so thoroughly altered, crushed, or heated that you cannot determine what it started as. The name comes from FUBA, the field acronym for "fouled up beyond all recognition," which perfectly captures the problem: a miner or geologist sees something hard and stone-like, but the original minerals, textures, and structures have been destroyed or obscured past recovery. What was once granite, limestone, or schist is now just a jumble of fragments or a recrystallized mass with no readable history.
The transformation happens through several common processes in underground environments. Impact brecciation from meteorite strikes or violent geological faulting smashes rock into angular fragments that cement together with no regard for origin. Hydrothermal alteration floods the rock with hot, chemically aggressive fluids that dissolve original minerals and grow new ones in their place. Burial metamorphism bakes rock under pressure and temperature deep enough to recrystallize it into fine-grained assemblages that look nothing like the starting material. Near ore bodies or contact zones, multiple processes can work together, layering destruction on top of destruction.
Why this matters in the field
For mineral exploration and resource geology, fubarite is mostly a liability. You cannot use it to read the structural history of a region, predict where ore bodies might sit, or understand what rock masses you are actually dealing with. A drillcore that comes back as fubarite gives you very little useful information about the surrounding geology. It complicates correlation between drill holes and forces geologists to rely more heavily on geochemical assay and spatial position than on visual inspection. In some cases, however, intense alteration and brecciation can signal proximity to mineralization; fubarite around a deposit perimeter might hint at economic geology nearby, even if the fubarite itself is barren.
The term is strictly informal and will not appear in formal stratigraphy or geological mapping. You hear it in site conversations, drill logs, and field notes where workers need a fast, honest way to say "we cannot figure out what this is." More formal alternatives exist: "protolith obscured," "thoroughly altered," or specific descriptors like "hydrothermal breccia," but these lack the directness of calling something fubarite.
Fubarite becomes problematic when it appears in volumes around shafts or tunnels, because its mechanical properties are unpredictable. Brecciated rock may be weak and unstable; recrystallized metamorphic fubarite can be surprisingly hard and brittle. Neither tells you much about load-bearing capacity, water permeability, or excavation difficulty. Site engineers must test directly rather than rely on hand specimen or thin-section description.
