To gimp is to wrap a core yarn or cord tightly with another material, usually wire or a contrasting thread, in a continuous spiral. The process creates a reinforced or decorative composite yarn that combines a foundation fiber with a protective or ornamental outer layer. This is done mechanically on a gimping machine, which feeds the core material through a rotating guide that lays the wrapping material at a consistent pitch and tension.
The core of a gimped yarn can be cotton, silk, synthetic filament, or cord of various diameters, typically ranging from 0.5 to 5 millimeters. The wrapping is most often fine wire, usually bright aluminum or tinned copper for visibility and flex, though silk or synthetic thread is used when a softer hand or different appearance is needed. Wire gimping is standard in military braid, upholstery trim, and decorative cords because the wire adds stiffness and prevents the cord from fraying or crushing during handling and sewing.
Variants and applications
Gimping appears in several contexts across textiles and trim. Flat gimped cords are used in military insignia, epaulettes, and dress uniforms because the wire reinforces the edge and prevents raveling. Gimped yarn feeds into braiding frames to create sturdy hollow braids for curtain tassels, upholstery fringe, and ecclesiastical trim. Double gimping, in which wire wraps both sides of a flat core, produces stiffer products for architectural and theatrical applications. Synthetic gimped yarn is common in theatrical costume trim and stage drapery because it resists fading and moisture.
Tension control during gimping is critical: too loose and the wrapping spirals, too tight and it cuts or crushes the core, or the wrapping thread snaps. Pitch (the number of wraps per unit length) is adjustable and ranges from 8 to 40 wraps per inch depending on the desired handle and appearance. The name gimp derives from old Dutch gimpen, meaning to bind or edge, and has remained stable in textile vocabulary for centuries.
Gimping differs from other wrapping processes: twisting combines two yarns by rotating them together, while gimping winds one material around a stationary core. Unlike spiraling, which may be loose, gimping is always tight and intentional. Quality control focuses on wrap uniformity, core coverage (typically 95 to 100 percent), and wire condition, since kinked or corroded wire produces visible defects in the finished product.
