glasspack

A kind of automobile muffler in which the exhaust gas passes straight through the center of the muffler. It consists of a smaller tube centered inside a larger tube that is enlarged or swollen in the middle, the gap between tubes being filled with fiberglass.

A glasspack is a muffler designed to allow exhaust to flow straight through a central pipe with minimal back pressure, while fiberglass packing in the surrounding chamber absorbs sound energy. The core tube runs the full length of the muffler, typically 16 to 24 inches long depending on engine displacement, and exhaust exits through perforations or slots near the outlet end. The outer shell is usually mild steel, sometimes expanded or chambered in the middle section to increase surface area for the fiberglass wrap.

The fiberglass itself serves as the acoustic absorber rather than a silencing chamber or baffle system. This packing compresses sound waves as they travel through the gap between the inner and outer tubes, converting acoustic energy into heat. Over time, fiberglass can degrade from moisture, salt, and thermal cycling, causing the muffler to become louder and less effective. Perforations in the inner pipe are typically 0.040 to 0.060 inches in diameter, small enough to block carbon particles but large enough to allow sound waves to pass into the fiberglass zone.

Glasspacks come in straight-through and offset inlet/outlet configurations. The straight design suits inline mounting under a vehicle; offset designs allow the outlet to be repositioned for different body styles or mounting angles. Some units include a second internal chamber or baffles ahead of the perforations to add restriction without significantly raising back pressure. Diameter ranges from 2.5 inches for small four-cylinder engines to 4 inches or more for V8s or turbo applications.

These mufflers are favored in high-performance and racing contexts because of their low restriction, typically 0.5 to 1.5 inches of water column back pressure compared to 2 to 4 inches in conventional designs. They became popular in street performance in the 1960s and remain common in hot rod and tuning culture. However, the simple design means less acoustic flexibility than multi-chamber mufflers, so a glasspack alone will always sound louder and more coarse than a production muffler, regardless of piping diameter or length.

Durability is the main trade-off. Water and salt ingress degrades fiberglass and corrodes the inner perforated tube from inside out. Stainless steel internals extend life in wet climates but add cost. Reverse flow and thermal stress can also cause the fiberglass to shift and compress unevenly, creating hotspots where the blanket burns away. Proper drainage holes and ventilation design in the outer shell help mitigate moisture problems.
